Anacortes is a city in Skagit County, Washington. It’s the northernmost city on the mainland of the United States, with a population of around 12,000 people. The name Anacortes was given by Captain George Vancouver during his 1792 voyage to survey the Pacific Northwest coast. He named it after a shipmate who died while they were circumnavigating South America in 1790.

Anacortes was incorporated as a city on October 13th 1891 and has its roots as an important port for coal and lumber shipped from Whatcom County (the region surrounding Bellingham).
