Countries In European Union

The European Union was first considered on the 9th of May 1950 however the first agreement was established in 1957, between six countries: Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Throughout the years as the European Union started to expand and many other countries joined, such as Denmark, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, which joined in 1973. currently, the European Union has 27 members.

European Union is not just a single market but also a single market with no borders for trade and the Euro (€) Currency, which is used by 19 member states of the EuroZone.

The Schengen Agreement was first signed in 1985, which allows the free movement of citizens, without passport controls at borders within the Schengen Area. 21 countries within the EU are part of this Agreement.

The newest country to join the European Union is Croatia, which joined on 1 July 2013. The most recent territorial enlargement of the EU was the incorporation of Mayotte in 2014.

Europe Day is celebrated on the 9th of May, every year.

In 2020, the United Kingdom left the European Union

“After the December 2019 election, the British Parliament finally ratified the withdrawal agreement. The UK left the EU at the end of 31 January 2020 CET (11 p.m. GMT).”

Türkiye has been a candidate for European Union membership since 1999 and has since made progress towards meeting the requirements for accession. However, the process has been slow and controversial, with many obstacles and setbacks along the way. Türkiye remained a candidate for EU membership, but the process of accession remained uncertain and subject to ongoing negotiations and disagreements.

On June 23, 2022, Ukraine was granted candidate status by the European Council, which called upon the European Commission to provide a report on Ukraine’s progress in meeting the conditions outlined in the Commission’s opinion on their membership application. This report will be included in the Commission’s regular enlargement package. The Council will then make decisions regarding future steps once all of these conditions have been satisfactorily met.
