The Real Mary King’s Close

The Real Mary King’s Close opened in 2003 to the public as a Historic visitor attraction, takes you on a journey through time as they uncover streets and houses hidden beneath one of the city’s most famous thoroughfares.

Mary King’s Close is located under buildings on the Royal Mile in the Historic old Town area of Edinburgh. The name ‘Mary King’s Close’ takes its name from a Merchant Burgess who resided on the close in the 17th century.

During the 18th century the close was partially destroyed and buried due to the Royal Exchange being built.

The area became shrouded in myths and urban legends; tales of haunting’s and murders abounded.

The Guides who walk you through the one hour attraction are dressed in costume characters that one time were historical resident of the Close.
