The South American Continent has 12 independent countries and three dependent territories. The smallest country is Suriname, which is the only Dutch-speaking region, Brazil is the largest country and occupies around 50% of the total mainland area.

The Continent borders are defined by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Atlantic Ocean is to the East and the Caribbean Sea to the northwest, its connected to the North America Continent in the northwest part. An overland border between two continents stretches along the Panama-Colombian state boundary.

The Continent of South America is the fourth largest behind Asia, Africa and North America. The population is the fifth largest behind Asia, Africa, North America and Europe.

Official Languages are spoken in South America: Portuguese, Spanish, English and Dutch.
