Emilia Romagna Name Origins

Emilia-Romagna is a region located in northern Italy. It takes its name from two ancient Roman regions: Emilia and Romagna.

  • Emilia is named after the Via Aemilia, a Roman road that ran through the region and was named after Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, a Roman consul who oversaw the construction of the road in the 2nd century BC. The region of Emilia was also known as Aemilia in ancient times.
  • Romagna is named after the Roman province of Romania, which included the region. The name “Romania” is derived from the Latin word “Romanus,” which means “citizen of Rome.” The region was known as Romania in ancient times and was later referred to as Romagna after the fall of the Roman Empire.

Together, the regions of Emilia and Romagna make up the modern-day region of Emilia-Romagna.
