Surprise is a city in Maricopa County, in the U.S. state of Arizona.
The city was founded in 1938 by Flora Mae Statler, who named it Surprise as she “would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much”.
The city is the spring training home of the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers baseball teams.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 85.6 square miles, of which 85.5 square miles is land and 0.04 square miles is water.
Surprise experienced dramatic growth over the following years and was officially incorporated as a city in 1960.
