Islamabad | Pakistan
Islamabad is the capital city of Pakistan and is administered by the Pakistani federal government as part of the Islamabad Capital Territory. It is the ninth-largest city in Pakistan, while the larger Islamabad–Rawalpindi metropolitan area is the country’s third-largest with a population of about 4.1 million people. Built as a planned city in the 1960s to replace Karachi as Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad is noted for its high standards of living, safety, and abundant greenery.
The name “Islamabad” means “City of Islam”. It is derived from two words: Islam and abad. Islam refers to the religion of Islam, Pakistan’s state religion, and -abad is a Persian suffix meaning “cultivated place”, indicating an inhabited place or city.
Islamabad Capital Territory, located on the Pothohar Plateau of the northern Punjab region, is considered one of the earliest sites of human settlement in Asia. Islamabad is located at 33.43°N 73.04°E at the northern edge of the Pothohar Plateau and at the foot of the Margalla Hills in Islamabad Capital Territory. Its elevation is 540 metres.
